According to a National Association of Colleges and Employers survey, only 43% of employers believe that recent college graduates are well-prepared in soft skills. This skill training gap leaves many Gen Zers struggling to secure employment and succeed in their careers.

Lack of Technical Training

The job market is increasingly becoming more technical, and Gen Zers must have the skills to keep up with the changing landscape. Unfortunately, many schools and colleges are not providing enough technical training to prepare their students for the job market.

A study by CompTIA found that only 45% of high school students have access to computer science courses, and just 8% of college graduates have a degree in a STEM field. The lack of technical training from a traditional education system disadvantages Gen Zers when applying for jobs in technical fields.

Lack of Career Guidance

Many Gen Zers enter the job market without knowing what they want to do or how to get there. This is partly because schools and colleges do not provide enough counseling services. Also, many Gen Zers are not exposed to a wide range of career options; therefore, they do not understand the skills and qualifications required for different jobs. This makes it harder for them to navigate the job market.

Lack of Real-World Experience

Employers want candidates with real-world experience. However, many Gen Zers are not getting enough opportunities to gain experience before entering the job market. This is because there are insufficient internships, co-op programs, and other work-based learning opportunities. As a result, many Gen Zers enter the job market without experience, a significant disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

Consequences of America’s Failure to Prepare Gen Z for Work

America’s failure to prepare Gen Z has made it harder for them to find employment. According to a report by the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for young adults aged 18-34 was 7.8% in 2020, significantly higher than the overall unemployment rate. This statistic highlights the challenges that Gen Zers face in the job market.

Moreover, according to a report by the Brookings Institution, young adults who enter the job market during a recession experience lower earnings throughout their careers.

America’s failure to prepare Gen Z for work is also impacting the country’s economic growth. The labor market is a critical component of the economy, and if Gen Zers are not well-prepared to enter the workforce, it could slow down the country’s economic growth in the future.
